Official Statement from the

North Carolina Office of the Governor

Released March 24, 2005

“The Governor’s Office and the NC Department of Administration have received a number of inquiries regarding the proposal to transfer the Division of Nonpublic Education from the Department of Administration to the Department of Public Instruction.  This proposal is part of the state budget discussion, and no final decision on this matter by the legislature will happen until June.

Governor Easley respects the rights and choices that parents make to educate their children in private or home schools.  This proposal is not intended to change the laws and policies currently in place.

The concept is for the agency - Department of Public Instruction - most familiar with education to house the division.  The hope would be that this would be beneficial to private and home schools and their students.  Again, it is not an attempt to change current policy or restrict choices that parents make.

The proposal is currently under consideration by the General Assembly.  You may want to share your views with legislators as they consider this proposal.

Again, thank you for sharing your views.”
