SUBJECT: Recognition of Outstanding Elementary Mathematics Teachers
The importance of mathematics instruction in the elementary schools cannot be overestimated. To underscore this reality, the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics wishes to recognize and reward those conventional school elementary teachers who make mathematics exciting and who nurture their students' enthusiasm by getting them involved in mathematics fairs, projects and competitions which extend and enhance everyday classroom experiences. Those teachers who succeed in motivating boys and girls to excel in mathematics are the ones we wish to single out for recognition. We hope that you will see this as a worthy undertaking and work with your staff to identify one K-6 teacher from your school whom you feel is deserving of this recognition.
The process calls for each headmaster of a school with any combination of grades kindergarten through six to nominate, using this nomination form, the teacher he/she believes does the most effective job teaching mathematics. The nomination form should be sent to the Department of Public Instruction by April 20, 2001, where it will be placed in competition with nominations from other private schools; and one teacher will be selected to represent the best in mathematics teaching from the conventional private schools in the state.
The teacher selected will receive one year's membership in the NCCTM, and a personalized award and recognition at the State Conference in Greensboro. Additionally, the teacher's name will appear in the Fall 2001 issue of the journal, the Centroid.
Your cooperation and assistance are vital to the success of this program. Please adhere to the deadline so that nominations are received no later than April 21, 2001.
Thank you for your support of this program.
