Select Your Method of Filing

A reminder that:

  • Notice of Intents are not accepted in or for the month of May and June.
  • The State of North Carolina home school statistical year begins each July 1 and concludes the following June 30.  Therefore, do not file your Notice of Intent until after July 1 of the home school statistical year in which you will begin your home school program.
  • An annual update should be completed beginning August 1st, ending September 30th of each year to ensure that DNPE has accurate contact information for each listed home school.

Please use only one (NOT both) of the following methods to file with DNPE your Notice of Intent to Operate a Home School in North Carolina (NOI):

Opening a New Home School: This electronic method is available for first time filers of a Notice of Intent to Operate a Home School in North Carolina.

This electronic method requires that you provide your currently valid e-mail address to DNPE; and within two business day, fax a copy of your diploma evidence for all individuals within the home who will be providing instruction. There are three steps involved in completing this process. No hard copies or electronic attachments can be submitted. Your formal acknowledgment of its receipt by DNPE will be sent to your e-mail address (not to your US Postal Service address).

OR

Re-Opening a Home School: This electronic method is available for those who had a home school listed with DNPE within the last five years. Only the previous chief administrator can submit a request to Re-Open.

This method requires that you:

  1. Provide your currently valid e-mail address to DNPE
  2. Provide the previous name of the home school
  3. Provide the previous address and county of the school when it was closed

Click on Opening a New Home School if this is the first time that you are opening a home school or if it has been longer than five years since you terminated a previously listed home school
